Abdominal Cramp.. or Pain

Two post about Abdominal Pain & Abdominal cramp during second Trimester ( 2nd Trimester = 14weeks to 27weeks)

Lower abdominal Pain During Pregnancy

Many women will experience occasional bouts of lower abdominal pain during pregnancy. While frightening at best abdominal pain during pregnancy is usually a normal and harmless condition. Lower abdominal pain during pregnancy can sometimes suggest a more serious problem however, so it is important you consult with your health care provider if you have any concerns regarding abdominal pain during pregnancy.

Causes of Abdominal Discomfort during Pregnancy
Many women experience lower abdominal pain during the early weeks of pregnancy. There are many reasons for this. For some women occasional or sporadic abdominal discomfort during pregnancy similar to menstrual cramps may simply be a sign that your uterus is preparing to carry your baby through the next nine months of pregnancy. Abdominal pain accompanied by other symptoms however, including chills, fever, spotting or bleeding may be a sign that something more serious is happening. If this is the case you should contact your health care provider immediately for a proper diagnosis of your abdominal pain.

Here are some of the more common conditions associated with abdominal pain during pregnancy:

  • Ectopic Pregnancy - This is a serious condition that occurs in early pregnancy when a fertilized egg attaches outside of a woman's uterus. Normally the egg attaches to a fallopian tube. Typically this condition is caught in the first few weeks of pregnancy. When not treated an ectopic pregnancy is very serious and may result in rupture of the fallopian tubes. Signs and symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy include spotting, abdominal pain and tenderness, bleeding, back pain , shoulder pain, dizziness or faintness. If you suspect an ectopic pregnancy contact your doctor immediately!
  • Miscarriage - Occasionally lower abdominal pain is a sign of a pending miscarriage. Symptoms of miscarriage typically include bleeding that is light or heavy and menstrual like cramping that gradually increases in intensity. Other women experience back pain. If you confirm a pregnancy then experience spotting, bleeding and cramping, be sure to contact your doctor right away.

  • Preterm Labor - Some women experience lower abdominal pain or cramping further along in their pregnancy. This may be a sign that your uterus is stretching, but may also be a sign of premature labor. Preterm labor is typically characterized by regular abdominal contractions that start dilating and effacing the cervix. You may experience vaginal discharge that is a bloody mucous accompanied by cramping, or low back pain. Be sure you contact your doctor immediately to rule out premature labor. In many cases early labor can be stopped effectively allowing mothers to carry their baby to term.
Other causes of lower abdominal pain during pregnancy may include round ligament pain, placental abruption or preeclampsia. Keep in mind if any of your cramps are consistent and accompanied by bleeding, excessive discharge or other worrisome symptoms you should contact your doctor immediately. Some women will also experience abdominal pain during pregnancy related to kidney stones, gallbladder disease or even pancreatitis. These diseases may result in debilitating pain and in some cases warrant surgery during pregnancy.

The good news is most women will experience mild abdominal discomfort throughout their pregnancy that occasionally occurs from the uterus stretching, from gas or even from constipation. Round ligament pain may result in short, stabbing and sharp aches in one or both sides of the abdomen. Fortunately this pain is relieved relatively quickly simply by relaxing or changing positions. Try to remain calm regardless of what you are experiencing, and remember when in doubt contact your health care provider immediately. Your doctor can help identify the cause of your abdominal pain during pregnancy and put your mind at ease in most cases.

Abdominal Cramps During The Second Trimester

Abdominal cramps during the second trimester are, generally speaking, something of a cause for concern. In fact, abdominal cramps during any of the trimesters of pregnancy may be a cause for concern. However, having said that, the fact of the matter is that mild cramping can occur during pregnancy without there being something else wrong. Knowing what to look for in terms of abdominal cramps during the second trimester is an important part of maintaining a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Mild and occasional abdominal cramps during the second trimester do not necessarily indicate a problem. Abdominal cramps become a problem during the second trimester when they are severe, they are persistent, or when they are also accompanied by any spotting or bleeding. Cramping at any point during pregnancy that is severe, lasts more than a few hours, or that is accompanied by bleeding is a cause for concern, and you should contact your health care provider immediately. This is particularly true if your abdominal cramps are accompanied also by other symptoms, such as a feeling of light-headedness or faintness, or if you have a fever.

During the first trimester of pregnancy, you may experience some light abdominal cramping along with a slight amount of spotting. This can be caused by implantation bleeding, which occurs in early pregnancy. Implantation bleeding, obviously, cannot be responsible for abdominal cramps during the second trimester. Even if you are in the first trimester, you should still talk to your health care provider if you have abdominal cramps that are accompanied by any amount of bleeding or spotting.

In some cases, a woman may feel mild abdominal cramps during the second trimester that are actually caused by ligament pain. This sort of cramp feels more like a dull aching sensation across the abdomen. In other cases, it may manifest itself as a sharp ache that runs along the side of the abdomen. Ligament pain tends to be most pronounced when standing up from a sitting position, or when you are coughing. Ligament pain may be treated with a variety of methods, including a maternity belt, having a warm bath, and even doing yoga.

Note: Ada lang cramp parut ani tapi masa tido & paksa terbangun sal cramp ani. Kalau di biar kan saja (malas kan bangun ani) makin sakit paksa lah bangun & duduk, lapas atu hilang sakit atu. Selalu nya cramp parut ani masa subuh lah ( ani aku yg slalu kena cramps waktu subuh ani)

Leg Cramps???

Why am I having leg cramps during pregnancy?

No one really knows why women have more leg cramps when they're pregnant. It's possible that your leg muscles are tired from carrying around all of your extra weight. Or they may be aggravated by the pressure your expanding uterus puts on the blood vessels that return blood from your legs to your heart and the nerves that lead from your trunk to your legs.

Leg cramps may start to plague you during your second trimester and may get worse as your pregnancy progresses and your belly gets bigger. While these cramps can occur during the day, you'll probably notice them most at night.

How can I prevent these cramps?

Try these tips for keeping leg cramps at bay:

• Avoid standing or sitting with your legs crossed for long periods of time.

• Stretch your calf muscles regularly during the day and several times before you go to bed.

• Rotate your ankles and wiggle your toes when you sit, eat dinner, or watch TV.

• Take a walk every day, unless your midwife or doctor has advised you not to exercise.

• Avoid getting too tired. Lie down on your left side to improve circulation to and from your legs.

• Stay hydrated during the day by drinking water regularly.

• Try a warm bath before bed to relax your muscles.

• There's some evidence that taking a magnesium supplement in addition to a prenatal vitamin may help some women. Check with your provider before taking any kind of supplement during pregnancy.

You may have heard that having leg cramps is a sign that you need more calcium, and that calcium supplements will relieve the problem. Though it's certainly important to get enough calcium, there's no good evidence that taking extra calcium will help prevent leg cramps during pregnancy. In fact, in one well-designed study, pregnant women taking calcium got no more relief from leg cramps than those taking a placebo.

What's the best way to relieve a cramp when I get one?

If you do get a cramp, immediately stretch your calf muscles: Straighten your leg, heel first, and gently flex your toes back toward your shins. It might hurt at first, but it will ease the spasm and the pain will gradually go away.

You can try to relax the cramp by massaging the muscle or warming it with a hot water bottle. Walking around for a few minutes may help too.

What if the pain persists?

If your muscle pain is constant and not just an occasional cramp — or if you notice swelling or tenderness in your leg — call your practitioner. These may be signs of a blood clot, which requires immediate medical attention. Blood clots are rare, but your risk is higher during pregnancy.

Note: 1st time pregnant, yes always cramps when I sleep at night. At first I don't believe what this auntie (friend at work before) always say that her leg always cramps when she was sleep during her pregnancy. But I do believe when I experience this while I'm pregnant especially when my pregnancy turn to 7 months.
