Kuala Belait - Police yesterday officially released the names of seven people who perished in the worst fire incident which occurred before daylight last Friday in Kuala Belait.
Two of the victims were identified as 37-yearold Indonesian Lela Sulastri and Malaysian Liew Li Ching who worked as a hairdresser for a year and a makeup artist for six years respectively in Wisa Beauty Salon in Kuala Belait.
Other victims were identified as 50-year-old Filipino Pineda Zosima who worked as an embroider and dressmaker for six years at Wisa Enterprise Bumiputera Building in KB; 29-year
old Filipino Maria Ellen Joy who worked as a waitress for eight years in Chop Hing Nam Café in KB; 50-year-old Filipino Susana Adriano Gonzales who worked as a dressmaker for two years at Norhim Dress Making and Beauty House; and 47year-old Filipino Mabini Corazon Tayco who worked as a dress-maker in Nurberjaya Enterprise for three years.
The sole male victim was identified as 33-yearold Filipino Bernado Gervacio Ruda who worked as a cook in Wing Soon Restaurant in KB for over three years.
Police said that the immediate families of the victims overseas and in the country have been contacted to submit DNA samples and assist the police in identifying the charred bodies removed from the fire-ravaged rental house.
According to the Police Investigating Officer, there are still three bodies (believed to be an Indonesian and two Filipinos) kept at the RIPAS mortuary, awaiting identification after undergoing the post mortem last Saturday. The remaining victims have already been identified by DNA analysis.
Police have been working closely with the Philippine Embassy through the National Bureau Investigation Philippines to acquire DNA samples of close family members and victims' dental records. While the Indonesian Embassy officials are still trying to get in touch with the victim's family.
Meanwhile, no tentative report has been released by the Fire and Rescue Department on the cause of fire.
However a survivor alleged that the blaze started from the storeroom area on the house's lower floor following a short-circuit in a switchboard nearby.
The owner of the house is assisting the police and Fire and Rescue to determine the cause of the blaze.
The old wooden double-storey house gutted by the blaze was built in the 1950s and the 24 occupants, all foreign workers, were said to have lived in cramped conditions, a neighbour alleged.
